Alan has specialised in professional regulation and standards setting since 1983, serving as lay member of a range of professional leadership bodies across several sectors: legal, healthcare, finance, science, property. He has held both executive and non-executive positions and is experienced in all aspects of the regulatory process, with a particular interest in education and standards. He has prepared codes of ethics for several professions and published numerous articles on professional subjects.
He chaired CILEx Regulation, the independent regulatory arm of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, from its inception in 2008 until 2015, establishing it as a key player among leadership organisations in the legal sector. Securing for legal executives the right to practise independently, in their own names – an aim they had pursued for many years, without success – is his proudest professional achievement.
Currently he holds lay member positions with leadership bodies for a number of professions including pharmacists, dentists, optometrists, actuaries, interpreters, dieticians and psychotherapists. In all he has been involved in standards setting for over 100 professional groups and is delighted now to be working with patent and trade mark attorneys.
Alan lives with his partner in north London and enjoys his grandchildren, music, words, pictures, travel, entertaining friends and, most of all, just talking to people. He is an enthusiastic member of The London Chorus, a versatile and active choir which sings in all the major London concert halls and, occasionally, abroad.
